The Definition of Management

Scholars have proposed several different definitions of management. The definitions are differ based on people's different observations of various aspects of management.

• Management as an art  

The definitions of management based on art was proposed by Mary Parker Follett. Follett defined management as the art of finishing a task thourgh someone else.

•  Management as a scince                                                                    

The definition of management based on science was proposed by Luther Gullick. Gullick defined management as the science that systematically tries to understand why and how humans work together to make something useful for humanity.
                                                                           

• Management as a process  

The definition of management based on process was put forward by James A. Stoner. Stoner defined management as the process of planning, organizing, leading, and supervising an organization's members and determining an organization's objectives.                                  
Those definitions above show that management is a process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling he activity of people in a organization and the process of using other resources to achieve the assigned objectives of the organization.
